The latest news on our wildflower meadows
REAP looks after two wildflower meadows – the Banana Bed at the bottom of Talbot Road and the Spire Wildflower Meadow at the back of Spire Hospital.
The Spire meadow has done well this year – you might have seen it on the Roundhay Garden Trail. It was planted 18 months ago so has just had its second summer. We will be strimming it soon – if anyone wants to help then please join the Rewilding group.
The Banana Bed has really struggled with the drought this summer. Some of us have had to water it in the very dry spell – many thanks go to the folk who live nearby for their help here. In spite of the drought we have seen many species of wild flower, including alfalfa, cranesbill, comfrey, lady’s bedstraw, yellow rattle, common mugwort, red clover and salad burnet. Jenny has recently strewn cuttings from York Gate Garden meadow on it prior to us strimming and re-seeding it in the coming months. News about the BB is shared on the Rewilding group WhatsApp [add link please]. Please look out for info and come along and help if you can. Ideas also welcome about how to manage this bed in the dry summers to come. Amanda
