About REAP

The Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP) is a community organisation based in the Roundhay suburb of Leeds. Founded in June 2007, REAP was formed by local residents with the initial aim of setting up a local Farmers’ Market.  The market has been running successfully since March 2008 and is now operated by our trading arm REAP Trading Limited, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of REAP.

REAP has extended its activities by forming special interest groups who have developed projects on the themes of Energy, Gardening, Transport and Education.

The Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP) continues to promote practical local action on climate change and the environment. It is now over a year since REAP was set up. Activity is underway regarding reducing energy use, transport, education, and gardening and composting.

Energy Group – An Energy Library lending equipment and resources is now available at  each Farmer’s Market+.  The group is working in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust and Yorkshire Energy Services to create a ‘low-carbon Roundhay’.  Other initatives the group are looking into include energy monitoring groups, and using postgraduate students to help assess energy efficency in Roundhay homes.

Transport Group – The starting point for this group is an audit of current initatives leading to participation in a Living Streets Project (a national initiative).

Education Group- Work is ongoing – learning from local construction initatives, setting up a local environmental disscussion group, along the lines of Cafe Scientifique to debate issues of local&national concern.

Gardening Group – The gardening group wants to encourage Roundhay people to grown their own veggies and fruit.  To support this they run a monthly garden club at The Open Door, Lidgett Lane and a Garden Share Scheme.  The group is also involved in community projects  and guerilla gardening around Roundhay.  Twice a year at the Farmers’ Market, they hold a well attended plant and seedling swap.

These are all excellent local initiatives but, as the urgency of the situation on climate change increases, we are aware that the time for making a difference is slipping away. We would welcome your views on how, as a local group, we can contribute more effectively to dealing with a national and global crisis.
